Kosciusko County, Ind. -- Firefighters from across Indiana are walking in full gear to raise funds for the Hoosier Burn Camp on Sept. 26.

Jonathon Piercy a firefighter at the Syracuse Fire Station 1 said he found out that the county fire station of Kosciusko County donates every year to the Hoosier Burn Camp, but he wanted to do more.

“Donations one thing, but when you do a physical act, it means a whole lot more. So, I said why we don’t just walk a few miles in full gear,” Piercy said.

“It started off as just being a firefighter’s walk. We were just going to do all firefighters from around the county but it’s blown up,” Piercy said.

Hoosier Burn Camp is a non-profit organization that helps kids with severe burn injuries who’ve suffered emotional or physical trauma.

Area firefighters along with community members will walk five miles from Syracuse Fire Station 1 to the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation on SR 13 and back. The walk will a little over two hours to complete.

Piercy said they’ve already raised over $4,000 in a span of one month.

“I know a couple of people here in town who have been burned and they’ve been in tears when I talk to them about it,” Piercy said.
